The stark reality and the big Aim

The Federal Communications Commission , in the first ever test conducted of broadband efficiency in the country found that around one third of population of America doesn’t have any access to broadband services and this it cited as the biggest infrastructural challenge of today’s times.

To make amends, it has submitted the pan to the Congress by which it seeks to provide each and every American broadband service by 2020. The another most optimistic part about this project is that the speed it seeks to provide to the 100+ million population of the country is nothing less than 100mbps. Compare this against the sober speed of 4mega bytes per second and you will realize the gravity of what I am saying or trying to say.

Apparently, the Federal Communication Commission was quite taken aback at the results and thus made a promise to itself and the country of providing every American an access to Broadband service and high speed internet. According to it a service cannot be called as a common medium for communication when it doesn’t cover a substantial portion of the population, 1/3 in the present case.

Federal Communication Commission believes that a high speed and efficient broadband is required for the overall development of the economy and virtually there is no sector or domain that doesn’t require its services. But for some, the statement and the plans by the FCC are a bit too exaggerated and they feel that in addition to broadband or the lack of it, there are other reasons as well for the underperformance of some sectors.

Harper government sucks rural broadband strategy fund for CAP

Liberal MPs said that Tony Clement , the industry minister , while making pay for Community Access Program (CAP) from the Rural Broadband fund must affirm the rural Canadians for their share of fund for the rural broadband internet.

Liberal Industry Critic Marc Garneau said that in the era of digitalization the rural broadband must be considered parallel to CAP as such programs help the rural area Canadians to get online employment, training, education, markets, economic and government services that they aspire to seek.

The industry ministry in rectification of his statement that the funds for CAP are coming to an end on april1 said that CAP sites which had been developed in 1995 by the liberal government to rural and remote schools, library and community centres will remain to get funding from rural broadband strategy fund.

Compare Broadband Packages and Deals for prices, download allowance, speed and contract length with major broadband packages available in UK.

Mr. Garneau said that Mr. Clement has rolled out letters to schools, libraries and community centres stating that they would not get internet funding in an attempt to control political damage but he has still got to give an explanation for the fate of rural broadband strategy if that fund would be used to cover CAP.

The rural broadband strategy fund rolled out in 2009 budget will run out in two years and till date zero funding has been made for the aforesaid purpose and the allocations has been done for the CAP from that very fund.

New Brunswick MP Jean-Claude D'Amours, speaking on behalf of upset constituents asked clarification from the minister Clement to clear up the confusion created by his statement showing government’s fiscal incompetency.

UK ISPs asked to open Infrastructure for all

British Telecom popularly known as BT has made its infrastructure available to all. Now BT wants other companies also to make their infrastructure available to all the other ISPs to increase the broadband coverage in the country.

The Conservative Party said that if this will happen then every Brit in the country will be able to access high speed internet through fibre network. BT has been in discussions with Ofcom since 2007 about this issue and the giant of telecom companies was of the opinion that if the other companies also allow their infrastructure to all then they can too.

High Speed Business Broadband packages and deals for all small, medium and big UK businesses and companies. Business broadband packages with simple installation, online account management and 24/7 support etc.

BT also said that this move will decrease competition only if the other ISPs allow access in their infrastructure to other companies. It is taking a big risk to allow other companies to allow inclusion in their infrastructure but it will be good to see if the other does that same thing. Although there are many companies like Virgin and Talk Talk who have already started their trials on superfast broadband and does not want to get included in BT’s infrastructure.

Fibre broadband subscribers to reach 106mn by 2014

According to a new report released by ABI research, the number of fixed-line broadband subscribers worldwide will rise substantially to 501mn by the end of 2014. 106mn of these are expected to subscribe to fibre services. Fibre broadband subscribers totaled 44 million at the end of 2009.

The Asia-Pacific region has the highest fibre broadband penetration, followed by North America whereas Asia-Pacific represents nearly 84 percent of worldwide fibre broadband subscribers. South Korea and Japan ranked highest in terms of fibre broadband penetration. NTT is the largest fiber broadband operator with approximately 12 million subscribers.

There are three fixed-line broadband technologies, such as DSL, Cable & Fibre. 65% of the world's subscribers connect via DSL, while 25% connect via cable and 10% connect via fibre-based broadband. The user demand while using the broadband services consist of file sharing, music downloads, online gaming, video conferencing etc.

The rise in Broadband penetration is expected to continue as many service providers are offering triple-play services thereby driving down access prices.

BT to share its tunnel network with rivals

BT one of the largest broadband service provider has plans to allow its competitors to use its underground tunnel network to run high-speed broadband. Such action would enable the competitors to lay their optical fibre cables without the expense of digging up pavements and thereby save the expenses.

Open access to all ducts might help BT and others to extend their coverage. BT is spending around 1.5 billion pounds on an optical fibre network which will be operational by 2012 Olympics games and will enhance the download speeds 10-fold. The company plans to recover some of its investment expenses by signing wholesale deals with its rivals.

Also, last month Bt has planned an aggressive pricing strategy for superfast broadband products which will challenge Virgin Media, its main competitor in the domain.

All such moves by BT are the efforts to boost its broadband market share, which is markedly lower than many of Europe's former fixed line phone monopolies.
